Photek -The National Ignition Center Brings Star Power to Earth!

15th Sep, 2021

A recent experiment at National Ignition Facility (NIF) at LLNL made a significant step toward ignition, achieving a yield of more than 1.3 megajoules (MJ). This advancement puts researchers at the threshold of fusion ignition, an important goal of NIF, and opens access to a new experimental regime. Photek is proud to have contributed to this work.

Over the past few decades, Photek has provided many PMTs, photodiodes, the specially developed PD-PMT, plus indirectly streak tubes for cameras that have contributed to the effort to reproduce the fusion processes that happen in the sun at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) at LLNL in the US. Photek has also joined in many collaborative efforts to improve the speed, gating, and dynamic range of our detectors with the various UK and US labs that work on fusion diagnostics at NIF, and this is ongoing with the upcoming ST-DS redesign with LLNL. This video explains how the National Ignition Facility (NIF) works and shows how they have brought star power to earth!
